This poster session addresses a study testing the effects of teaching a strategy for writing summaries, a component of comprehension, to students with and without disabilities in inclusive 10th-grade English classes. Experimental instruction was carried out over 11 instructional periods and focused on teaching students to follow a set of steps to apply summarization rules. Comparison instruction focused on teaching students strategies for taking tests and learning vocabulary. Measures included a test of strategy use and a standardized reading test. Statistically significant differences were found between the groups in favor of the experimental group on measures of strategy use and summarization. The program was designed so that secondary teachers could use it in inclusive general education classes.

Her hypothesis, procedure, results, graphs, and conclusion validate SIM and how and why it works. Stop by Desiree's poster and visit with this young, budding researcher.
