SIM Learning Strategies for Preservice Educators

PURPOSE
This class will enable preservice educators in teacher education programs to provide empirically validated SIM interventions to prospective teachers. Participants will explore several strategies from the SIM Learning Strategies curriculum and will receive sample syllabi, books, and teaching resources that can be used to modify existing courses or construct new courses.
CONTENT
This class will focus on the SIM Learning Strategies Curriculum theory and application, emphasizing SIM’s Stages of Acquisition and Generalization. Participants will learn about the more than 30 years of research that has resulted in the development of the principles and components of SIM and the Learning Strategies Curriculum and will meet the researchers. Class content will feature Learning Strategies related to reading, remembering, studying, taking tests, writing, motivation, and cooperation.
PARTICIPANTS
• Faculty involved in preparing teachers for special education, inclusive education, at-risk education, collaboration, educational psychology, and administration.
• Teacher educators who prepare school personnel who will provide skill, tutoring, and learning strategy support.
METHODS
Staff from the Center and other national SIM professionals will lead the class. Participants will develop individual plans for including SIM interventions in their courses, will have opportunities to practice and try out strategies, and will discuss implementation and other related issues.
EXPECTATIONS
Each participant will be expected to integrate Learning Strategies instruction into their courses and to report progress and effect to the Center. Those who successfully complete the class will be able to order SIM materials to use in their teacher education efforts and will have the opportunity to become certified inservice SIM Professional Developers.
MATERIALS
Participants will receive the following SIM Learning Strategies Curriculum Manuals, along with instruction, practice in their use, and access to supporting technology.
